What do I Think About Halloween?

<---- This is our groups pictionary about halloween.

Halloween is nothing more than knocking on random doors and getting a bunch of lollies. I  think that halloween is about the Devils birthday and the creation of evil characters.. I don’t celebrate halloween because my parents don’t want me to. It’s time to find out what halloween is really about?

After we wrote down what we thought of halloween, our teacher gave us time to research about what halloween was really about. This is what I found out.

The origin of dressing up on halloween day also came from people back in the day. On halloween, people would think that bodies from the dead would rise from their graves and start roaming around the earth. So children and adults would dress up in ghosts and witches as a form of camouflage to blend in with the dead.

The origin of trick or treat came from catholics. On all souls day (November 2nd) the priest would ask the church to pray for the people that are in the purgatory. That is a place that is in between heaven and hell, and if you pray for them, then that gives them a chance to go to heaven. Back then, people would go to houses and ask for soul cakes, and in return, they would pray for the people in the purgatory.

Before halloween they would celebrate a day could Lemuria. On that day, people would pour roman milk on graves to stop them from rising and roaming on the earth. It would also block them from trying to enter the earth.

Jack-O-Lanterns were actually not lighted up in pumpkins, they were lighted up in turnips. When Jack died, he got sent to hell. But he was so bad that the devil didn't want him to stay there. So the devil sent him back to earth and with Jack was a flick of fire. Jack used that and put it in a turnip, and he uses it to roam around at night.

D.L.O Reflection!!

911 James Crusader Starford from Team 5 PES on Vimeo.

Positive - In the past week, we got the task of creating a D.L.O about an event in history. The event in history that my group and I picked was the Twin Towers (9/11) terrorist attack on the USA. One of the good things in our movie was that we used more animation in this movie than in any of our other movies. Our animation in the background made the news report more interesting to watch. We also got the movie finished in time. We showed lots of different perspectives, from the perspective of Osama to the military and also news reporters. There was also a bit of humour in it. I think that our movie was quite entertaining because our audience liked it. We used some interesting angles and shots in our movie.

Minus - Something that was bad about our movie was that we didn’t finish our planning and that really was a struggle because we only had one day to finish it. We also didn’t show how it affected New York and the world and I think we could have conveyed that a whole lot better. The information that we found out could've been shown with more detail in our movie. Our animations also could’ve been more detailed as well.

Interesting - Something that was interesting to our audience was the news reporters part. People also found the Osama Bin Laden part interesting as well. We had the same two characters play the part of the terrorists and then the part of the American military.

This is our movie. Comment down below what you think of it.

20h Famine 2013

“Yes it’s finally time for famine” I said. A famine is when people from around New Zealand volunteer to go 20 or 40 hours without food, and on Friday, my school did our 20 hour famine. I was really excited because we also had a sleepover at our school. We were doing the famine for the children in Bougainville Papua New Guinea. I was in team blue.

I was really anxious about the famine because on the same day, I had to go to a Rugby trial for Bill Mclaren East. I knew that I was going to get really really hungry. Straight after my trial I really wanted an energy drink but I remembered that I wasn’t aloud to or else that would be cheating. I knew that what I was doing for the children in Bougainville was good, so I just drank water.

After my shower I quickly rushed to the car because I was late. When I got to the car I saw my barley sugar and juice and I remembered that, those were the only two things we could have. I quickly grabbed my juice and started to skull it. I was really happy after that. My mum had to buy me another juice.

My favourite activity was the balloon popping game. It’s a game when we get into teams and we tie a string to a balloon and then tie that around our ankles. After that people vs each other to try and put other peoples balloon’s. It was really fun because no one could get me and I couldn’t get anyone as well.

Finally it was time to go sleep. The movie we watched was Wreck it Ralph. I watch that movie a thousand times at home so when I saw that we were watching that we were watching that I just went straight to sleep. I was the first person to go sleep as well because the day after that, I had to go to my rugby game.

The 20 hour famine was really really awesome and I can’t wait to do it next year.

What's Really In Our Food? Eggs

New Zealanders eat two and a half million eggs a day. This amounts to 920,000,000 per year. There are 3 main ways that eggs are produced: Caged, Free Range, and Barn. We investigated what really is in our eggs.

People like to eat their eggs in many different ways. Poached, scrambled, fried, and lots more. But in New Zealand, more people like their eggs poached better than any other way to eat it. Probably because it is cooked in water and it is very healthy for you, and it might be because it tastes better.

In New Zealand, we do not import eggs from overseas because there might be lots of salmonella in the eggs. Luckily here, all our eggs are good to eat and all the chickens are healthy and very delicious.

Eggs have a thing in it called b12. It is a vitamin. An egg has ½ of b12 we need per day. If we do not have enough b12 in our body then it can cause fatigue, you can tire out easily and many more bad things can happen to you. B12 is important for you and it is good to have lots of eggs.

Eighty nine percent of the eggs we buy are from caged hens.  It is because they are cheaper than other eggs. The thing about caged hens is that they don’t treat them fairly. They put six hens in one cage and the cage is on an angle so that when the eggs come out, the eggs roll down. If the hens get close to the eggs, there is a electric wire that stops them from harming the eggs and that is not humane.

The thing about free range hens is that they can do whatever they want and like run around, perch, and dust bath. a dust bath is kind of like a chickens version of a shower so if they don’t have a dust bath to wash of all the insects and dust then they will be very dirty. Free range eggs taste better as well but they are expensive.

Eggs are good for you and I really had fun investigating about it.

WILL.I.AM Comes to Pt. England School

“Wonder who it’s going to be” Today at Pt. England school we were going to have a special guest come into our school to give us a cheque worth of one hundred thousand dollars. The day before the special guest came to our school, we didn’t know who it was and how much the money was. I couldn’t wait to see who it was.

I was personally excited because all the prefects got to greet the celebrity into our school and shake our hand. I thought it was going to Stan Walker or any celebrity from New Zealand, But I didn’t know anything. Mr. Burt said that if he told anyone the secret celebrity wouldn’t come and we wouldn’t get a cheque. We were going to find out who it was the next day, I COULDN’T WAIT!

It was finally time to meet our special guest. I was really excited to see who it was going to be. Everyone gathered into the school hall all excited to see who it was going to be. 5 of the prefects were outside waiting to greet in our special guest. There were flashes of lights everywhere and large video cameras were everywhere. “I know you guys have been excited about the celebrity that’s coming” Mr. Burt said. “Well you are going to find out right now” Goosebumps starting arriving on my arms and it was WILL.I.AM. WOW who would ever think it was going to be him, and I get to shake his hand.

He got greeted into our school with our kapa haka group and our senior hip hop crew. Both performances were amazing. Then WILL.I.AM had a turn of talking. He was talking about how he grew up in a poor neighborhood and how he had no dad. His story was very inspiring and it pushed me to push harder at my dream.

I can’t wait til
l another celebrity comes to our school.

Easter!

What does Easter mean to you? For me it means gathering around with the family and remembering why jesus died on the cross for us. Every year me and my family have a family reunion. And every year it is very fun. We do lots of fun things,

Every year my church has a Easter service. It is on the night before Easter and it is between 9pm to 12am. The reason why I like going to church on an Easter service is because our junior youth does cool performances and we sometimes do cool plays during the service. It is very fun at the service.

Another reason why I love Easter, is because every year on Easter, my family has a family reunion. We do lots of fun things at our family reunion like play fun games, cool quizzes, Easter egg hunts, and many more fun activities. The first thing we do is do a prayer and we have our own little service to thank Jesus for dying on the cross to forgive our sins.

If you are wondering why Easter bunnies are apart of Easter, it is because it is a signal of the rebirth of Jesus. I like the chocolate Easter bunny because it is very delicious and it taste great.

I can’t wait for Easter next year so we can do it all over again.

The Day Everything Dissapeared

Rain was pouring from the sky as if I turned on the shower. It hasn’t been like this in years. All I could see was rain pouring on the skytower (we live at a house where it had a perfect view of the skytower). Rumours have been going around that on a day like this, something really bad is going to happen. It was called ‘CRUSADER DAY’. It wouldn’t of been today that something bad was going to happen. ‘POOF’. “What was that” I said as I quickly turned my head around.

My little brother Starford just fell on the ground. He started crying as if his eyes were clouds. “Where did the couch go” I said. ‘POOF’. “Did you hear that Starford” I said (there was no point talking to him). I heard it from two stories up in our house. The glass shaking as I was rushing to the elevator with Starford. “I gotta go find out what that is” I thought to myself. I ran as fast as I could to go to my room. Nothing was in there. My 6 iPads were gone, my 3 ps4’s were gone, my 10 iPhone 5’s were gone, everything was gone. My eyes were wide open, “CRUSADER DAY” I thought to myself.

‘POOF’ I heard it again. Mum and dads car parked outside, I quickly went to rush over and to the window and check and, the sky tower was gone. As I went downstairs to turn on the news, mum and dad walked in with the shopping, and it just disappeared. “The sky tower, statue of liberty everything has gone missing” The news man said. ‘POOF’, “MUM I CANT BREATH” I said to my mum struggling. The air disappeared. What were we going to do? We went to NASA to get some air tanks and as soon as we breathed in those air tanks, the sky tower came back. I knew how to solve this problem.

As quickly as I could I ran floated to the news station to tell everyone to go to NASA and get air tanks. “One breath of one person can bring back one thing, so hurry up”. ‘AAAHHHHH’ it sounded like everyone was choking and saying ahh at the same time. Everything came back and all we needed was a person to breath in so we could get air back, but everyone had already breathed in. I turned around and saw my little brother Starford with a really really purple face. I quickly grabbed a air tank for him, and everyone just dropped from the ground.

I was the hero of that day, because I saved everyone. That was an adventurous day, but it was also the most craziest day of my life, and I don’t ever want that to happen again.
